WWII West Indies Bahamas U.S. Forces

Raymond Perry, Aviation machinist’s mate, first class, of Wilsondale, W.Va. scratches the back of Mike, a macaw, which he picked up at the Naval Air Station on a lonely Bahamas island Oct. 29, 1943. The United States bars the entrance of macaws into the country so Mike is Perry’s pet for the duration. The station is one of the bases we got from England in a swap for destroyers. (AP Photo)
