The Pulitzer Prize was established in 1917 by publisher Joseph Pulitzer to recognize outstanding achievement in journalism and is American journalism's most prestigious honor. The Associated Press has received 56 Pulitzer Prizes, including 34 photo Pulitzers. The AP has been awarded Pulitzer Prizes in both photography categories: for Featured Photography and Breaking News Photography. AP's most current awards were awarded
to Emilio Morenatti in the feature photography category for a poignant series of photographs that takes viewers into the lives of the elderly in Spain struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic; and the AP photography staff won for breaking news photography for a collection of photographs from multiple U.S. cities that cohesively captures the country's response to the death of George Floyd.
